Heroes: Derek Rabelo (The Blind Surfer)

posted by coach Jay D

We take way too many things for granted. The old cliche that, “you don’t know what you got ’till it’s gone” is so true, yet so unappreciated.

Here’s Pro Surfer, Makua Rothman being humbled and blessed to have Brazilian Surfer, Derek Rabelo cross paths with him.
Rabelo is a blind surfer who has the ability to not only read the waves without the gift of vision, but to actually surf the waves pretty damn well, too.

Never take your physical being or capabilities for granted.
Some people aren’t granted that luxury, and just as fast as you’ve been given these gifts, they can all be taken away from you tomorrow.

Enjoy and Express yourself through Movement, challenge yourselves to grow and get out of your comfort zone.

Why?
because you can!

Have A Strong Day.

A Moment of Strength: Females Gettin’ Down (And Up)

posted by coach Jay D

I’ve been crazy busy with more things than you could ever dream of me being busy with, from studying, to training, to training myself to preparing for the ZombiePocalypse. I’ll be back and posting as soon as I can conjure enough time and thoughts for decent posting. In the meantime, here’s a little inspiration for my female athletes.

40kg Turkish Get Up

32kg TGU

Both textbook-technically perfect and a source of inspiration for tonight’s Fuel Kettlebell Class.
See you Strength Seekers, there!

A cup of PVC Pipe…a pinch of Adhesive Spray…..And don’t forget the secret ingredient – Tender Loving Care (TLC).

The Recipe can be found here.

If you missed tonight’s Kombat Arts Workshop on JM + Recovery, I’ll be holding another one this Wednesday.
Free for Kombat Arts Members and $10 for non-members.

More Workshops to come, every month. I have the topics brewing in my brain.

Getting Obsessive About Moving

posted by coach Jay D

It’s cool that we make this thing called “Movement” a part of our lives. After all, our bodies were made to move.

Nike seems to be taking this idea to another level by enabling us to make ourselves obsessive about how we move, when we move and how often we move.
Introducing…The Nike+ Fuelband.

The Nike+ Fuelband, from my understanding is a waistband monitor, sync’ble (see, I make up my own words) with your mobile device to gauge and monitor your every movement.
I’m not sure how I feel about this yet, but it’s an interesting concept that I’d give a shot, along with my JD Training Athletes.

“If You Think You Are Beaten” by Walter D. Wintle

posted by coach Jay D

If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don’t.
If you’d like to win but think you can’t,
It’s almost certain you won’t.
Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger or faster person,
But sooner or later, the person who wins
Is the person who thinks they can.

Happy Birthday, Brandon Lee

You would’ve been 47 years old today.
R.I.P.

Important words from Brandon quoting Paul Bowles from “The Sheltering Sky”

“Because we don’t know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. And yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small number really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, an afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you can’t even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four, or five times more? Perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps twenty. And yet it all seems limitless…”

Never take any moment for granted. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed.
Have A Strong Day.
